It feels like vanity to assume my thoughts are of value to anyone, but I've been doing UX design of various flavours for so long, and made so many mistakes, that I have to believe I can make someone's life easier by sharing what I've learnt. I see so many people out there repeating my mistakes when they are managing their teams, designing their screens, and creating their products. There's no need to make these mistakes, I've made them all for you, and I'm happy to share.
This post though, isn't sharing hard won knowledge. It exists purely because I need a first post so that thee are three in the grid when I launch this portfolio. But I will throw in a couple of 'quick wins', just to get my aim in.
First, when asked what drives your career, don't answer 'I want to have a good time, all the time'. I look back on this answer with both pride and regret. It doesn't make you look professional, apparently. Also, not as many people have seen Spinal Tap as you think.
Second, invest in a good pen, and a good keyboard. Although as you advance in your career you spend an increasing amount of time talking and pointing at things, and less time clicking and typing on things, clicking and typing are still the main physical interractions in any UX job, so be kind to yourself and make them satisfying interactions.
All right, carry on with your assigned tasks.
A very good pen.
